LAKEVIEW – A win wasn’t enough to satisfy Monty Nash last Friday.
The Grant Union football team beat Lakeview 20-12 Friday, but had a few miscues along the way. Nash, the Prospectors’ head coach, said the team he saw on the field in Lakeview wouldn’t have beaten Ontario. Grant Union came away with a big 23-20 win against Ontario Sept. 5.
“I felt we played poorly,” Nash said. “It’s not that Lakeview is a bad team, but we should have scored more points and done better. We weren’t prepared the way we need to be.”
The Pros started the game off in the hole after giving up a touchdown on a fumble for the game in as many weeks. Lakeview returned a fumble 65 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Grant Union had two more turnovers and failed to convert inside the red zone three times.
“Lakeview got the fumble and exploited it for a touchdown,” Nash said. “You can’t have your offense spotting the opponents six points.”
Although the offense had a couple setbacks, the Pros still managed to put up more yards against Lakeview than Ontario. They finished with 384 total yards, 265 on the ground and 119 in the air, against Lakeview and 342 Sept. 5.
Tyler Martin led Grant Union with 117 yards rushing and now has 163 yards on the season. Martin earned 34 of those yards on a touchdown run in the second quarter. He also threw a single pass for 22 yards. Jimmy Cook added 67 yards and had a two-yard touchdown rush of his own. Austin Ranft threw for 97 yards this week including a 22-yard touchdown pass to Connor Smith. Connor Smith and Dustin Lippert grabbed three passes each for 37 and 48 yards respectively.
However, it was the Pros’ defense that pulled them through the game. They only allowed the Honkers to gain 125 yards of offense in the game and the only touchdown scored on the defense came when Grant Union had a 14-point lead with less than a minute remaining in the game.
“Our defense definitely did an outstanding job,” Nash said. “It’s kind of our forte. I believe defense wins games. Cook and Lippert recovered some fumbles. Cash Wenick and Cook played well on both sides of the ball.”
Nash said Grant Union will work on controlling the ball as they prepare to face La Grande in La Grande at 7 p.m. Sept. 19.
