The Grant Union volleyball team split its first day of league play last week.
The Prospectors earned a win against Umatilla in the first game of a doubleheader on the road Saturday. They swept the Vikings in three games: 25-22, 25-19 and 25-12.
Grant Union coach Karen Broemeling said her team started slowly against Umatilla but warmed up gradually.
Grant Union earned 31 kills in the match. LaShawnda Gill led the team with nine kills. Katelyn Page and Jacee Retherford each had six. Sharon Houpt helped out with 23 assists.
The Pros picked up 12 aces against Umatilla. Taylor Croghan had four, Houpt three and Gill two. Gill and Houpt were strong on defense as well, with 14 and 11 digs, respectively.
The Pros continued their road trip in Riverside after the Umatilla game. Riverside beat Grant Union 3-1.
Grant Union’s defense slowed in the Riverside game and offensive errors hurt the team. The team had nine serving errors and 42 hitting errors.
Grant Union also had 73 defensive digs, compared to the 111 digs during the Umatilla game.
“Grant Union had some great plays and digging returns,” Broemeling said. “We had some inconsistent play which we will be working to improve and look forward to meeting Riverside at home.”
The Pros had 29 total kills against Riverside. Gill led with 12 kills. Page earned six kills and Aspen Riggs had five. Houpt had 23 assists followed by Retherford with two. Grant Union had eight serving aces. Houpt and Gill each had three.
Saturday’s games and a Sept. 9 win over Crane give Grant Union a 10-3 record overall and a 1-1 record in Eastern Oregon League play. The Pros will play Burns at Burns Thursday, Sept. 18, and will compete in the Cole Valley Christian Tournament Saturday, Sept. 20.
