Letter: Where were you on 9-11?

To the Editor:

“God and the soldier all men adore, in time of danger, not before. When danger is past and all things righted, God is forgotten and the solider slighted.”

These words came to mind during the 9-11 Patriot Day observation at Canyon City Cemetery.

Though well advertised, only a double handful of citizens were present. The American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, National Guard Honor Squad and local law enforcement there to fire a volley made up the less than 50 people there.

Stirring words were spoken about the heroic efforts by police, firefighters and emergency response men and women who lost their lives seven years ago on that fateful day. So too was the obervation, how easily people forget.

Looking about, only the sheriff represented any elected county official. There was one high school student, several children with their parents, but most were senior citizens. Where was everyone?

We want and expect freedom and security. We have it but it comes with a price. The cost is taken for granted by most, since they have never paid the expense in time from their lives to serve under the flag.

Nearly 100 veterans’ names from Grant County were read that have answered the final bugle call since 2000. They paid their and our dues for the liberty we hold so dear. May God bless them and forgive those who forget.
