PENDLETON – According to preliminary data received by NOAA’s National Weather Service in Pendleton, temperatures at John Day averaged near normal during the month of August.
The average temperature was 68.0 degrees, about normal. High temperatures averaged 87.4 degrees, which was 0.5 degrees below normal. The highest was 102 degrees on Aug. 17.
Low temperatures averaged 48.5 degrees, which was 0.4 degrees above normal. The lowest was 38 degrees, on Aug. 31.
On 13 days, the temperature exceeded 90 degrees. It was hotter than 100 degrees on two days.
Precipitation totaled 0.30 inches during August, which was 0.55 inches below normal. Measurable precipitation – at least .01 inch – was received on four days. The heaviest precipitation report was 0.12 inches on Aug. 19.
Precipitation this year has reached 7.63 inches, which is 1.42 inches below normal. In the past six months, the total precipitation at John Day has been 6.06 inches, which is 1.12 inches below normal.
The outlook for September from NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center calls for near normal temperatures and below normal precipitation. Normal highs for John Day during September are 78.4 degrees and normal lows are 40.4 degrees. The 30-year normal precipitation is 0.78 inches.
