Workshop looks at juniper costs, values

Juniper – the tenacious tree that has spread like a weed across the Western landscape – will get a new look in a workshop set for Sept. 24 at the John Day Forest Service Center.

“Adding Value to Juniper” will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The workshop costs $20, which includes lunch and handouts.

The program will include a discussion of opportunities and costs for juniper removal and the value of increased forage production and water quality with removal.

A panel discussion featuring people who work in the juniper industry will be included.

The program also will look at the burgeoning biomass and small-diameter wood industries, and there will be a round-table discussion of “where to go from here.”

The event is sponsored by the Oregon State University Extension Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, and Columbia Blue Mountains Resource Conservation Service.
