CANYON CITY – Imagine, an Elvis sighting right here in Grant County.

“Elvis” will perform his Vegas Act at Canyon City Community Hall at 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, as part of the city’s kickoff fund-raiser for the renovation of the community hall. The concert will feature an Elvis impersonator who also will offer glimpses of Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Dion, Conway Twitty and Rick Nelson.

Tickets are $15 a person and snacks and dessert will be provided.

A load of wood will be raffled off that evening during the intermission. Tickets are available at City Hall or at the concert for $1 each or six for $5.

Child care will be available upstairs at the Grantville Theater for $5 a child. A call to city hall at 575-0509 in advance will help officials know how many children to plan for.

City Recorder Tammy Bremner, Mayor Dorman Gregory, the community hall committee and the city council are all involved in the project to renovate the community hall.

With $750,000 worth of improvements on the list – including a stairway, elevator, new kitchen and bathrooms that are handicap accessible – this will be a major undertaking.

Bremner says that while it seems like a lot of money, the city is hoping to get a major portion of the work funded by grants.

City officials are working with architect Mark Seder of Portland, who has drawn up the proposed improvements, and Public Affairs Research Consultants (PARC), also of Portland, to determine the renovations and amount of money needed to complete the project.

PARC is helping the city with a fund-raising plan and will do most of the grant writing.

Money raised from events such as the Elvis concert will help the city come up with the match for grants.

“We really need community support,” Bremner said. “The building will be here for the community to use, hopefully, for a long time.”
