JOHN DAY – Forest Service officials have lifted some restrictions on campfires and driving in the north zone of the Malheur National Forest.

Restrictions continue in effect on the South Zone, and the Industrial Fire Precaution Level (IFPL) remains at Level 2 across the fores.

The change in the north went into effect Thursday, Sept. 25. It lifts restrictions on campfires outside of developed campgrounds, off-road vehicle use, and smoking.

Firewood cutting is permitted on the Forest except for the areas affected by area closures within the Egley Complex and Shaketable Complex fire areas.

The changes came as cooler temperatures eased the current fire danger, but visitors were urged to be safe and cautious while out in the woods.

A list of specific roads, as well as maps of the areas that are affected by these closures can be obtained at Forest Service offices in John Day, Prairie City, and Hines.
