SENECA – A Burns man died in a one-vehicle accident Saturday that wasn’t discovered until Monday morning off Forest Road 15, northeast of Seneca.

Bicyclists traveling through the area Monday morning happened to see the wreckage, which was off the side of the road near Wickiup Campground on the Malheur National Forest. The cyclists rode to the nearby residence of John and Lindy Bastian to report the accident about 9 a.m.

Amos Douglas First Raised III, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Grant County Sheriff Glenn Palmer and Oregon State Police Sgt. Gordon Larson investigated the accident.

Palmer said the accident apparently occurred Saturday night, but there were no skid marks. Fifty or more cars leaving a fund-raiser event at Lake Creek Youth Campground Saturday night probably passed by the site, but wreckage was not visible from the roadway. Palmer said the cyclists only saw it because they were riding on the edge of the pavement.

The investigation determined that the accident occurred as First Raised’s vehicle, a 1993 GMC pickup truck, was northbound on Road 15 through a series of curves. The truck traveled about 195 feet on one shoulder of the road and went over an embankment, rolling onto its top.

First Raised, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was not wearing a seatbelt, and he was ejected from the truck and pinned beneath it, Palmer said.

Blue Mountain Volunteer Ambulance was dispatched to the scene and the crew extricated the body, which was taken to Driskill Memorial. Doug’s Motor Vehicle Repair and Towing removed the truck.

Palmer said the investigation is continuing, but that preliminary findings indicate that alcohol was a factor in the crash.
