Celebrity farmer talks about food

LA GRANDE – Joel Salatin, a farmer, humorous lecturer, and author, will speak at a conference in Northeast Oregon in October.

From 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 4, he will visit the La Grande Farmers’ Market and present the keynote address on “Building a Food System that Works” at Oregon Rural Action’s (ORA) seventh annual convention on the Eastern Oregon University campus.

He will conduct a workshop for farmers and those interested in becoming farmers on “Making a White Collar Income in Agriculture.”

Registration begins at 1 p.m. Saturday and the cost is $10 for members and students and $40 for non-members. This includes locally grown refreshments and free childcare.

Salatin also will visit Pendelton to sign books and give a presentation from 4 p.m. to dusk Friday, Oct. 3, at the Pendleton Farmers Market.

On his Virginia property, Salatin raises livestock using holistic methods of animal husbandry. The meat from the farm is sold to over 1,500 families, 10 retail outlets, and 30 restaurants within 40 miles of his farm.

His books include “Hog Heaven: The Food Buyer’s Guide To Farm Friendly Food.”
