JOHN DAY – Donors have a chance in the coming week to contribute to a good cause while putting a school administrator and a sheriff’s candidate in the hoosegow.

In the fund-raiser organized by the Grant Union High School Future Farmers of America, two of four prospective “inmates” – one school administrator and one candidate in the sheriff’s race – will go to jail, where they will be given a cell phone and told to call their friends and supporters to raise money for bail.

The money will benefit the FFA, with a portion of the proceeds going to the John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation Department.

The candidates for incarceration are: Grant Union Principal Mark Witty, athletic director Curt Shelley, Sheriff Glenn Palmer and write-in challenger Mike Durr.

Residents can help out by calling the school, 575-1799, to pledge money toward their favorite.

Don Speakman, a student and spokesman for the FFA, said the fund-raiser is in conjunction with homecoming festivities next week. He said the administrator will be announced at an assembly on Wednesday, Oct. 8, and the sheriff’s candidate probably will be announced at the homecoming bonfire Friday, Oct. 10.

The chosen pair will serve their time in a Grant County Jail holding cell, separate from the regular inmates.
