PRAIRIE CITY – Prairie City’s gym must have had a few extra brooms left around last week.

The gym was the site of two sweeps. Prairie City was the victim of the first, falling 3-0 to Adrian Friday, Sept. 26. They lost the games 25-12, 25-20 and 25-16 to the Antelopes during the match.

Despite the loss, Prairie City coach Melissa Woodbury said the team improved its serving after making several service errors in games to Huntington and during the Pine Eagle Tournament.

“We only had one missed serve during the match,” Woodbury said. “We’ve been working on two different service drills.”

Prairie City’s Katie Cary and Skylar Fast each had six hits in the match.

Although Prairie City had few service errors, Adrian seemed to be stronger on serves. Adrian’s Terra Rust and Andrea Shenk combined for 22 aces during the game.

The Panthers got their turn to sweep the competition during their game against Ukiah Saturday, Sept. 27. They took the match 3-0. They won the games 25-10, 25-12 and 25-22.

“I thought we did pretty good today,” Katie Hoberg said. “After we lost yesterday it felt good to win easily. Adrian was very hard to play. They passed, set, killed and well just everything.”

Ukiah has had difficulties this year. The Cougar team is composed primarily of foreign exchange students – with 11 on the roster.

“For most of these girls, it’s the first time they’ve touched a ball in their lives,” Ukiah coach Jamie Schell said. “They’re working and improving. Most of them know English pretty well, which is helpful. We only have one girl that I have a language barrier with, but we use a lot of hand signals during games to help out.”

Prairie City will spend next weekend in Crane. They will play Crane at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 3, in a High Desert League match, and will compete in the Crane tournament Oct. 4.
