JOHN DAY – Ben Thompson, a correctional officer for the Grant County Jail who suffered a brain hemorrhage Sept. 17, has been able to return home to stay with family and recuperate.

Thompson was flown to St. Charles Medical Center for treatment after the sudden illness.

According to an online journal updating his progress, doctors found that the problem was caused by a noncancerous tumor near Thompson’s kidney which restricted an artery, causing pressure on blood flow. Thompson’s short-term memory had been hindered for a while; however, a stint was used to bring relief to the artery and he improved greatly, coming out of intensive care on Oct. 1.

Family and friends are contributing to the website, where the journal is found, which allows them to send get-well wishes.

Sgt. Steve McGuire said employees at the sheriff’s office have donated 193 hours of their vacation and sick leave which will allow Thompson to rest up through October and November.

“I hope he takes the time to get better,” McGuire said, and “follows the doctors orders.”
