JOHN DAY – The Grant Union volleyball team could have used a jump start last week.

The Prospectors came out slow and gave up a 10-point victory, 25-15, to Vale in the first game of the match. However, it didn’t take Grant Union long to warm up and they narrowed the deficit to three in the second game, but lost 25-22. The Pros turned the tables on the Vikings in the third game and earned an 13-point victory.

“We started out slow against Vale, then took the third game back from them,” Grant Union coach Karen Broemeling said. “Our Defense played well but Vale was picking up many of our hits.”

However, the Vikings closed the match with a big 18-25 victory in the fourth game.

Grant Union suffered from numerous setbacks in the game on attacks. The Pros ended with 35 kills, but also 27 attack errors. The team’s attack percentage was only 5.3. LaShawnda Gill led the team with nine kills and nine attack errors. Aspen Riggs and Katelyn Page each had six kills and five attack errors. Shannon Croghan had 13 service assists and Jacee Retherford had 12.

Gill led the defense with 21 digs, and Bre Wilson had 19.

Vale’s junior varsity team won both games 25-13.

Grant Union played in Lakeview against Modoc and Lakeview Saturday, Oct. 4. The Pros won both matches, but went to five games against Lakeview. They beat Modoc 25-10, 25-15 and 25-14. Lakeview made Grant Union work and it was tied after four games, 25-17, 25-15, 25-15 and 25-27. The Pros won the tie breaker and the match 7-15.

Gill had nine kills against Modoc. Ashley Slinkard, Taylor Croghan and Riggs each had six kills. Karina Hoffman had four and Wilson earned two.

“Shannon Croghan did a great job setting for us,” Broemeling said. “We were missing 2 players due to SATs. We played both matches with 8 players.”

Hoffman hit four aces against Lakeview. Gill and T. Croghan had 3 aces each, Megan Nash with 2 and S. Croghan with 1. Gill once again led the team in kills with 15 and Riggs had 11. Slinkard had nine kills, Hoffman with 6, T. Croghan with 3, S. Croghan with 2 and Nash with 1.

“Sophomore setter Shannon Croghan did a good job spreading out our offense and getting the ball to the hitters again,” Broemeling said. “Taylor Croghan led with serve receive, followed by LaShawnda Gill. Bre Wilson had great serve receive, along with Megan Nash, Karina Hoffman and Ashley Slinkard. Outstanding defense by Gill, Nash, Wilson and T. Croghan.”

Grant Union’s JV won both matches. They beat Modoc 25-23, 25-22 and Lakeview 25-7, 25-13.
