Letter: Accessible leader

To the Editor:

I had the pleasure of attending Candidate’s Night on Oct. 2 at the Grange Hall. As part of his opening speech, John Huffman (Republican candidate for House District 59) mentioned that he “returns phone calls.”

Although a few skeptics in the audience may have taken this statement with a grain of salt, I personally know it to be true. In fact, John Huffman will often return an e-mail with a personal phone call.

When he was appointed to this seat, after Rep. Dallum vacated it, he spent some time assessing his predecessor’s unfinished business. He came upon an e-mail I had sent to Rep. Dallum many months before regarding an issue important to me, but relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. Not only did I get an e-mail asking if Rep. Dallum had addressed my concerns, but John Huffman followed up with a personal phone call so he could better understand the issue.

It is rare to find anyone in a position this demanding that will consider the concerns of one constituent on a low-level issue worthy of a phone call. I believe John Huffman to be a highly-accessible leader who I trust to represent us in Salem.
