Letter: Follow the pioneers

To the Editor:
Les Zaitz’s column Oct. 8 about Grant County’s economy was a breath of fresh air! This is about doing what we can do … instead of the constant whining we hear on TV: “Who is going to bail us out?” and “I didn’t have to pay a penny!” Unlike the candidates promising to give us all free health care and education, etc, etc, Mr. Zaitz urges us to follow the pioneers who had to “suck it up” and solve their problems themselves.
That spirit is evident here in Grant County in many volunteer services such as the Food Bank, those who give their time and those who give food and money; in Search and Rescue; at the annual Health Fair – to mention just a few.
This is about “doing it largely on our own.” As he suggests, maybe we don’t want help anyway, aware that a government that has the power to give us everything has the power to take away everything.
