IRRIGON – If playing back-to-back games wore out the Prospector soccer players, they didn’t show it last week.

Grant Union won two straight games Oct. 16 and 17 and outscored its opponents 18-5. The Pros faced Central Christian Friday, Oct. 16, beating them 9-2, and followed that up with a 9-3 win over Irrigon Saturday, Oct. 17.

The Pros outshot their opponents 88-18 through the two games, and had 42 shots on goal compared to 14 from the other teams. Grant Union also made improvements in shot placement from Friday to Saturday. The Pros took 10 less shots against Irrigon, but scored the same number of goals as against Central Christian. In their previous meetings with the teams, Grant Union beat Central Christian 8-1 and Irrigon 2-1.

“Our kids played extremely well,” Purnell said. “They came ready, prepared and focused to play. I was really happy with how well they passed the ball. We shot the ball well. Our offensive attack worked better when we were passing and spreading the field.”

Henrik Schia led the team with six goals in the games. He had a hat trick in each outing. Nathan Wunz had a hat trick of his own in the Irrigon game, but didn’t score in the Central Christian game. Darren Frazier put one goal in both days and David Sprouffske had an assist in each game.

Grant Union faces Culver at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22 in Culver before returning home for the final regular season match against Riverside at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. Grant Union and Riverside entered the week separated by a single point in the 3A Special District 5. The Pros beat the Pirates 4-3 in Riverside in their first meeting Oct. 4.

The Grant Union soccer team has only won a league title in 2002 when they were part of the Mountain West Conference. The team could win their first 3A Special District 5 title with two wins this week.

“Riverside has Irrigon and then us and we have Culver and then them, so the winner of the game Saturday will likely be the league champion,” Purnell said. “This is going to be a big week of preparation.”
