Urgent call for volunteers!

JOHN DAY – Adult volunteers are still urgently needed to help out at the upcoming “Teen Halloween Party,” at the John Day Elks Lodge, said Angie Jones, organizer of the party.

The “alcohol and drug-free event” is for students in grades 7-12 and will be held upstairs at the lodge 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31.

Many of the duties and roles have already been assigned, as much as possible, to teen volunteers, according to Jones. Grant Union High School Dance Team members are scheduled to help out with the games, music and taking tickets at the door. Much of the planning and donation-gathering has also already been done.

However, it’s the call for adult volunteers, to directly supervise the teens and ensure their safety at the party, that is still so urgent, Jones stressed.

A haunted house will go on as planned downstairs at the lodge, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and is open to the community. Teens at the dance party will be allowed to go downstairs to the haunted house, but if they leave the building during the evening, they will not be allowed to re-enter.

Jones said, “This event helps keep teens off the streets while, at the same time, they can enjoy a fun evening. The party is a very important event, much appreciated and supported by the community.”

“Without that involvement and support, it won’t happen,” she added.

Admission to the party is $1, which will go to the Dance Team, plus one canned food item, which will be donated to the Grant Western Lumber Company’s food drive.

Anyone who is able to help out for any part of the evening is urged to call the John Day Elks Lodge at 575-1824, or Angie Jones at 620-0595 as soon as possible.
