Little League meeting

JOHN DAY – Grant County Little League’s annual meeting to elect board members will be 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Outpost Restaurant. Harvest costume party

JOHN DAY – The community is invited to a Harvest Costume Party and Pie Social 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, 139 NE Dayton Street, John Day.

Wear a biblical or historical costume and win a prize! Costumes will be judged in these categories: Adult Biblical, Adult Historical, Kid Biblical, Kid Historical, Cutest, and Most Original.

Star-gazing night

The John Day Fossil Beds National Monument will offer a telescopic tour of the stars and planets 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25. The free program will take place at the Thomas Condon Visitor Center, nine miles west of Dayville in the Sheep Rock Unit. Bring binoculars and dress for the evening weather. More info: 987-2333.

Prenatal classes

JOHN DAY – A new five-week series of prenatal classes starts Monday, Oct. 27. Classes will be held 6-9 p.m. in the downstairs classroom at Blue Mountain Hospital. Wear comfortable clothes; snacks will be provided. The cost is $30 and scholarships are available. Blood drive

Spooky play at GUHS

JOHN DAY – The Grant Union High School drama class is ringing in the Halloween spirit with a presentation of “Teenage Night of Living Horror,” Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 29 and 30, in the old gym. Showtime is 7 p.m. both nights.

Tickets at the door for this hilarious and spooky play are $4 for adults and $2 for students. Doors open at 6:40 p.m.

Help wanted

JOHN DAY – Help is needed for the annual Halloween Party and Teen Dance at the Elks Lodge in John Day! Especially needed are adults to supervise at the party, 6-10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 31. This event, which is open to youth in grades 7-12, has been very well attended in past years.

School book fair

CANYON CITY – Humbolt Elementary School will host a Scholastic Book Fair, “Book Fair Safari,” in the school’s library, the week of Nov. 3-7.

Elementary students and teachers can preview the books for their wish lists Monday and Tuesday. The fair is then open to the community 3:30-7 p.m., Tuesday; 8 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday; and 8 a.m.-noon, Friday.

Book fair customers may help the school build classroom libraries and improved children’s reading skills by purchasing books through the Classroom Wish List and One for Books programs. More info: Bonnie Zick, 575-0450.

Cooking class

MT. VERNON – The community is invited to a free vegetarian cooking class featuring healthy holiday foods 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, at the Mt. Vernon Grange.

Included will be demonstrations of traditional favorite foods with a healthy twist, a demonstration of a simple, natural remedy for fighting the common cold using hot water, and samples of the foods prepared during the evening.
