BAKER CITY – The Mt. Vernon Middle School seventh-grade football team beat the Baker City Bulldogs Oct. 22 in a game that had the crowd cheering and biting their nails until the final play.

The Mustangs came out on top 24-18 in double overtime giving the seventh-graders an undefeated season.

Jacob Legg had a good offensive game with two touchdowns, including a run from midfield to the end zone.

The teams were tied at 12 when the buzzer rang at the close of the fourth quarter. In the first overtime each team scored a touchdown, and in the second overtime the Bulldogs didn’t score and on the third play Lane Williams ran to the end zone to make the win with help from key tackles made by Dalton Reimers.

MVMS eighth-graders lost to the Bulldogs on home turf the day before, making the seventh-grade victory especially sweet.

Head coach Pete DeRosier said both teams have played well overall, and combined they are 6-2 on the season.

“They are very good on and off the field,” DeRosier said. “They pay attention and play hard at practice and at the games. They’re good offensively, and they’re extremely tough defensively.”

DeRosier has help from assistant coaches Tony Gardner, Tyler Roberts and Zach DeRosier.

Seventh- and eighth-graders will play on Crane’s field at 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 31 for their final game of the season.
