CANYON CITY – Grant County voters appeared to be passing both ballot measures that aimed at stiffer sentences for property criminals.
In early returns, local voters were approving Measure 57 by a vote of 1,917 to 1,631 and Measure 61 by a vote of 2,279 to 1,315.
Statewide, voters were approving Measure 57 by 61 percent to 39 percent in early returns. Measure 61 was split at 50 percent.
Measure 57 was proposed by legislators and drafted by district attorneys to bolster sentencing of certain types of criminals while also funding some drug treatment to get at the roots of such crime.
Measure 61 was proposed by former legislator Kevin Mannix to mandate prison time for many such crimes, with no provision for drug treatment.
Cost and drug treatment were the major sparring points for the campaigns. If both measures pass, the one with the most “yes” votes will go into effect.
Here’s a look at some other measures and how Grant County is leaning:

Measure 55 – changes date redistricting kicks in: passing in Grant County.
Measure 56 – removes double-majority requirement in certain elections: passing statewide; failing in Grant County.
Measure 58 – restricts teaching in languages other than English: failing statewide; passing in Grant County.
Measure 59 – created unlimited deduction of federal income taxes on state returns: failing statewide; failing in Grant County.
Measure 60 – sets performance as standard for teacher pay raises: failing statewide; narrowly passing in Grant County.
