RIVERSIDE – Kyle Weymouth had an odd game last week.
Weymouth scored 12 points during Grant Union’s 48-0 win against Riverside Friday, Oct. 31. However, the 12 points didn’t come from two touchdowns as might be expected.
Weymouth put five extra-point attempts through the uprights before halftime. Then late in the third quarter, Weymouth slipped into the end zone for his first varsity touchdown and kicked his own extra point. Weymouth played running back during his time on the junior varsity team.
Weymouth wasn’t the only JV player to get some carries in the varsity game. Grant Union put the ball in the hands of 12 running backs in the game.
Prospector coach Monty Nash said an early lead gave him the opportunity to put more people in the game. Grant Union led 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 at halftime.
“I wanted to get a lot of the kids into the game and give them some chances to play and we did,” Nash said. “We started getting them in at the end of the second quarter. They got a lot more in the second half. Weymouth got three carries in the second half.”
Zane Murray also proved to be a utility player during the game. Murray scored two touchdowns in the game. He got his first touchdown on a 48-yard run in the second quarter. Murray followed that up with a interception that he returned for a touchdown minutes later. The interception was Murray’s first of the year. He plays linebacker, a position that doesn’t lend itself to defending the pass often. He also led the team with 81 yards rushing on three carries.
“It was the third play after the kickoff and the ball was kind of just put up and he picked it off,” Nash said.
Grant Union’s Tyler Martin scored the first points of the game and had six carries for 70 yards. Cody Williams also ran for a touchdown. The Pros ran for 319 yards in the game. They also worked the pass into the offense and threw for 127 yards. Quarterback Austin Ranft passed for 119 and two touchdowns. Ranft hit Dustin Lippert and Connor Smith with touchdown passes. Ranft also had 24 yards rushing. Jake Combs had a single pass for eight yards.
Riverside struggled on offense and wasn’t able to put drives together during the game. The Pirates haven’t won a game this season, averaging one touchdown for every two games.
The Pros’ win completes a perfect 2008 regular season at 9-0. They will face Myrtle Point at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at Three Flags Field. It will be Grant Union’s only home game of the playoffs due to rankings and the Oregon School Activities Association playoff system.
“It’s good news that we get to play at home,” Nash said. “It’s a really good thing and I feel it’s to our advantage.”
Grant Union goes into the game as the No. 1 seed from the Eastern Oregon League and Myrtle Point is the No. 3 seed from the Sunset League.
The Bobcats were 5-2 in league and 8-2 on the season. Although they only lost two games during the season, they were outscored by opponents 215-207 in 10 games. The Pros have outscored their opponents 334-75 this season.
Nash said although Grant Union has the seeding and numbers on its side, you can’t predict the playoffs.
“It’s a whole new season now,” Nash said. “We’ll just have to see what happens. You win or you go home.”
Tickets for Saturday’s game will be $6 for adults and $4 for kids and no passes will be accepted.
