Voters fill Public Forest Commission posts

No candidates were on the ballot for three of seven Public Forest Commission seats, so write-in votes are filling those posts.

The votes for the seats that did draw a candidate were:

? Position 3 – Tad Houpt, 2,359

? Position 4 – Roger McKinley, 2,516

? Position 5 – King Williams, 2,216

? Position 6 – Michael G. Smith, 2,222

? Alternate 1 – Larry Blasing, 2,231

Dave Traylor was named to Position 1 on the strength of write-in votes. He also got the most write-ins for Positions 2 and 7, so those positions went to the next highest write-in candidate.

That left Walt Gentis with Position 2 and Merl Brown in Position 7.

The Public Forest Commission was created by voters and is not an agency of the county government.

The commission went without any candidates in the primary election, and a member said the deadline for filing just got past them. After that, the county clerk tried to contact the current position-holders, who were allowed to be on the ballot in the general election.
