Veteran gift project

JOHN DAY – The annual Veterans Gift Shop project of the Ellis Tracy unit of American Legion Post 77 is under way. Gifts are being collected for the Portland Veterans Hospital, so that hospitalized veterans can “shop” free of charge for items for their families. This helps them share Christmas with their families even when they have little or no income.

A display window is set up at Mosier’s Home Furnishings. New items as gifts can be taken to Mosier’s or call Ruth Harris, 575-0076, to arrange for pick-up.

Bowling benefit

JOHN DAY – Kountry Lanes and Smokin Pins Barbecue are holding a “Bowl-A-Thon” to support Special Olympics 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15.

Enjoy a day of family fun while helping raise money to send Grant County Special Olympics athletes to state competition.

Search class offered

MT. VERNON – The Grant County Sheriff’s Office will offer a free search and rescue class Saturday, Nov. 15, in the Mt. Vernon Community Center. The class starts at 8 a.m.

The class is intended for members of the Sheriff’s Posse, the Grant County Snowballers, the Oregon Hunters Association, Search and Rescue Auxiliary and anyone interested in search and rescue. Call the sheriff’s office at 575-1131 to preregister.

Chamber meeting change

JOHN DAY – Due to the Veteran’s Day holiday, the Grant County Chamber of Commerce has postponed their monthly luncheon meeting to Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the chamber office.

Republican meeting

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Republican Central Committee will hold its organizational meeting 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the County Courthouse conference room. All newly-elected precinct persons and anyone interested are encouraged to attend.

Oregon Hunters meeting

MT. VERNON – The Grant County Chapter of the Oregon Hunters Association has changed their monthly meeting location to the Mt. Vernon Grange Hall. The group’s next meeting will be 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, with a potluck dinner starting at 5:30. Call Jean Sagert at 575-1007 for more information.

Christmas sale

JOHN DAY – The United Methodist Church’s thrift shop will hold a Christmas sale Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 19-21, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. The shop is located at 126 NW Canton Street.

Financial workshop

JOHN DAY – A financial literacy workshop will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Families First of Grant County, 401 S. Canyon Blvd. in John Day.

The free workshop will cover the topics of budgeting to create savings, debt reduction and asset building, building a good credit rating, and consumer protection and financial institutions. The free workshop will be led by Mark Lesniak, program manager for Head Start, and Maxine Day, OSU Extension chairperson. Call 575-4079 to preregister.

Legion Christmas bazaar

PRAIRIE CITY – American Legion Auxiliary 106 will hold its Christmas Bazaar 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Prairie City School. Members of the school’s girls’ basketball team will serve a continental breakfast and lunch 8 a.m.-4 p.m. More info: 820-3597 or 820-4776.

Christmas on the Prairie

PRAIRIE CITY – “Christmas on the Prairie,” sponsored by Talents and Treasures and the Prairie City Community Association, is right around the corner. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. More info: Joy Waterhouse, 820-3325.

“Feed my Sheep”

JOHN DAY – Redeemer Lutheran Church is sponsoring a “Feed my Sheep” fund-raiser to raise monetary donations for the Grant County Food Bank. The deadline for donations is Monday, Nov. 24.

Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, through their “Care in Communities” program, will match a minimum of 50 cents per dollar donated.

This successful event raised over $2,000 for the food bank the past two years. Donations are tax-deductible. Checks may be made out to Redeemer Lutheran Church, 627 SE Hillcrest Rd., John Day, 97845.

Thanksgiving dinner

RegionalDAR meeting
