Valley View food drive

JOHN?DAY – Valley View Assisted Living Residence has a collection box inside the entryway lobby for canned food items to be donated to the Grant County Food Bank for the holidays.

Democrat meeting

JOHN DAY – The Grant County Democratic Committee will hold a meeting 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the Outpost Restaurant. Guest speaker will be Sarah Loose from the Rural Organizing Project. The topic will be “Where do we go from here? Keeping the energy going.” More info: 575-0898.

Thrift shop sale

JOHN DAY – The United Methodist Church’s thrift shop will hold a Christmas sale Wednesday through Friday, Nov. 19-21, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. The shop is located at 126 NW Canton Street.

Financial Workshop

JOHN DAY – A financial literacy workshop will be held 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Families First of Grant County, 401 S. Canyon Blvd. in John Day.

The free workshop will cover the topics of budgeting to create savings, debt reduction and asset building, building a good credit rating, and consumer protection and financial institutions. The free workshop will be facilitated by Mark Lesniak, program manager for Head Start, and Maxine Day, OSU Extension chairperson. Call 575-4079 to preregister.

JOHN?DAY – Valley View Assisted Living Residence is having a talent show 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 24. Come and join us for a day of fun. Share your talents or just come to enjoy the entertainment! Refreshments will be provided.

Mad Hatters party

JOHN?DAY – The Grant County Mad Hatters will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the Outpost Restaurant for their annual Christmas party.

Members and guests are asked to bring a food item to donate to the Grant County Food Bank, as well as an item (wrapped or unwrapped) for the silent auction.

Bingo fund-raiser

CANYON CITY – A “Bingo Night Fund-raiser” will be held 6-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 29, at the Community Hall in Canyon City. Proceeds will go toward the building restoration fund. Light up a Life!

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospice invites the public to their 4th annual “Light up a Life” celebration, 6:30 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5, in the foyer of Blue Mountain Hospital. A light will be illuminated in honor of loved ones or in memory of those who have died.

Train open house

CANYON CITY – The Canyon Mt. N-gineers will host an open house from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at the Train Barn in Canyon City.

Guests will be treated to a showcase of N-scale model trains operating on a modular layout. Admission is $4 for adults and $1 for children ages 6-12. Bring a canned food item for the Grant County Food Bank and receive $1 off admission. One dollar discount coupons will also be available at John Day Dairy Queen, Subway of John Day and other area businesses.

Holiday Showcase

JOHN DAY – The 12th annual Holiday Showcase will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday and Friday, Dec. 4 and 5, at Grant Union High School’s old gym.

There will be group and solo performances by students of Body, Fitness and Dance, and by the Grant Union High School Dance Team. Jody Thompson will be taking photos with packages available at the show.

Admission is $5 plus one canned food item to be donated to the Grant County Food Bank. Children under 6 are free. All proceeds will benefit the Grant Union High School Dance Team and Junior High Competing Team.

Elks hoop shoot

CANYON CITY – The public is invited to attend the annual Grant County Elks Hoop Shoot, which will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, at Humbolt Elementary School’s gym.

The boy and girl winners in each of the school competitions for age groups 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 will qualify to shoot in the county hoop shoot.

The first- and second-place finishers at the county hoop shoot will receive trophies. The third-place finishers will receive a plaque. The first-place boy and girl finishers in each age group will qualify to compete in the District Elks Hoop Shoot to be held in Burns on Jan. 31.

Hospital Auxiliary bazaar

JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospital Auxiliary’s annual Christmas Bazaar will be held 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, in the Grant County Fairgrounds pavilion.

Local vendors and artisans will be on hand selling an array of homemade and handcrafted goodies: birdhouses, candies, baked goods, handmade fishing poles, crocheted angels, dog coats, handcrafted furniture, and needle-crafted items such as fleece throws and bibs.
