- Grant Union's Dalton Moore grabs the first Prospector touchdown against Cascade Christian Saturday, Nov. 29 at Summit High School in Bend.
BEND – The Grant Union football team advanced to the final round of the Oregon School Activities Association playoffs with a win this weekend.
The Prospectors beat Cascade Christian 28-13 in a game that was one-sided from the start. Grant Union’s Tyler Martin picked off a pass from the Challenger’s quarterback Colton Cochran on the second play of the game. Dalton Moore caught a touchdown pass from the Pros’ quarterback Austin Ranft to give Grant Union a 7-0 lead on the ensuing drive.
The Challengers’ luck didn’t get any better. Cochran fumbled the snap on the third play of their next drive. Grant Union’s Connor Smith recovered the ball and took it in for a 30-yard touchdown.
The Pros continued to pile on the defensive and offensive pressure throughout the first quarter and half. They led 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and 28-7 at halftime.
Grant Union relaxed on offense in the second half, and allowed Cascade Christian to get some offensive steam. However, after allowing an early second half touchdown Grant Union’s defense shut them out the rest of the way.
Although the Pros played strong defense they gave up more yards than they earned. Cascade Christian had 322 yards compared with Grant Union’s 260.
Grant Union will now travel to Hillsboro to face defending OSAA state champion Gold Beach at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, November 29. Gold Beach beat Regis 41-29 to earn a spot in the finals, but will be playing without starting quarterback Jeffery Knox as of now. Knox was ejected from the Regis game for unsportsmanlike conduct resulting from a taunting call and as a result must sit out the next game. He had been called for a similar call for excessive celebration earlier in the game. Knox rushed for 219 yards and four touchdowns on 12 carries against Regis.
