MONUMENT – On Tuesday, Nov. 25, 35 Monument folks enjoyed a tuna-noodle casserole accompanied by Carrie’s yummy rolls, vegetables and birthday cake. Many people had already left on trips to visit family and friends for Thanksgiving, so attendance was down.

LaVerda Cox received the Chester’s gift certificate, while Jack Cavender got the free meal and Tiina Allas will use her gift certificate at Len’s Drug. We would like to express our appreciation to the merchants for their assistance in providing these gifts.

December is almost here and bus trips to John Day on the 11th and to Spray on the 18th are planned.

On Saturday, Dec. 13, a holiday bazaar in Long Creek will take place. They will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with food, surprises and Santa arriving at 1 p.m. Let’s go and support our friends of Long Creek.

Monument seniors will be serving dinner at Columbia Power Co-op’s annual meeting Dec. 6. They will appreciate any seniors who could help out with preparing, serving and cleaning up for the dinner.

It is great to celebrate this unique all-American holiday, eating turkey and all the goodies that go with it. It is also very nice to be able to buy a turkey of any size, anywhere, at any time. I remember during our first months in Bolivia, I was hungry for turkey and had been eyeing some turkeys running loose around the community. I figured I could buy one.

One week before Thanksgiving, I spoke to a lady who raised turkeys and arranged to buy one. She agreed to have it ready one day before Thanksgiving. I went to pick it up on my bike and found out, to my dismay, that the turkey was mostly skin and bones. There was just enough meat to feed six folks, but at least it did taste like turkey!
