Larry S. Armstrong, 66, of Mt. Vernon, died Jan. 21, 2009 from lung cancer. He had been staying in the Marcola area, while undergoing treatment at Sacred Heart Medical Center at RiverBend in Springfield.

Mr. Armstrong was born March 16, 1942 in Rye Valley to Frank and Lola (Clark) Grant.
He served in the U.S. Navy for four years. He worked as an electrician and a heavy equipment operator, retiring in 1988. A member of the United Methodist Church in John Day, he lived most of his life in Grant County.
Survivors include his wife, Rosetta Mae Armstrong of Mt. Vernon; sons, Larry (Jeanie) Armstrong II of Portland and David (Peg) Chun of Marcola; grandsons, Trent (Amy) Armstrong, John (Leah) Armstrong, Larry Armstrong III and Kavi Grace; granddaughters, Tori (Dan) Klein and Mona (Sheng) Saechao; great-grandchildren, Jase, Lilly, Madelyn and Jasmine; sisters, Lola Newcomb of Kettle Falls, Wash., Gladys Mealey and Alice Hudspeth, both of Olive Branch, Miss., Nettie Hudspeth of Napa, Calif., Janet Stock of Montana and Jeannie Day; brothers, Thomas Garman of Portland, Eric Garman of Fruitland, Idaho, Frank Grant of Napa, Calif., and Wayne Woods of Portland; and stepmother, Laverna Grant of North Bend.

He was preceded in death by his son, Matthew Armstrong and his brother, Jerry Grant.
A graveside Celebration of Life service will be held at Moon Creek Cemetery in Mt. Vernon March 16, 2009.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Medical Center Hospice in Eugene, or Blue Mountain Hospice in John Day.
