Outdoor Fun in Grant County

HuntingGrant County is unique in that it sits in the center of a hub of activity during Oregon’s big game seasons. Oregon’s big game units are located in such a manner that eight of them are either partially or completely within the borders of Grant County. Hunting seasons are staggered throughout the year, which means that anyone lucky enough to have a tag for these areas, will have the opportunity to enjoy the splendor that Grant County has to offer.

For years in the past, literally hundreds of hunters and outdoor sportsmen and women made Grant County their destination point during the fall hunting season. It’s not quite as hectic now, with tag drawings determining when and where hunters may hunt, but Grant County is still top of the line when it comes to outdoor adventure with rod and gun.

Bird watchingGrant County’s bird life is as varied as its geography. Over 200 species either reside or visit the area during the course of the year.

A checklist of birds found around the area is available at the Forest Service Supervisor’s Office in John Day.

FishingFor fishing enthusiasts, Grant County offers a variety of opportunities to fish. It also offers something for every angler, whether they have special needs for handicapped access or whether they enjoy a hike into one of the area’s more remote lakes and streams. Stream fishing can be found throughout the county during the summer.
