The Grant County Regional Airport has expanded its runways in recent projects to better serve the flying public and open the facility to greater use by small corporate aircraft. The airport also has a GPS instrument approach system which allows use of the airport in almost any weather conditions, and an up-to-date automated weather station (AWOS).

Visitors can fly into the airport, located on a bluff above downtown John Day, and use a convenient courtesy car to visit attractions in the area or dine in the many local restaurants.
A new terminal building that will house both airport operations and the U.S. Forest Service fire base is in the planning stages. The $5.1 million project is due for completion in 2010.
