Boys top Umatilla, lose to Riverside

JOHN DAY – Some free throws toward the end of the game brought the Grant Union High School boys up to win 42-34 against Umatilla last Saturday, Jan. 16.

The home game included good contributions from many Prospector players, said head coach Jason Miller.
“Defensively we played well,” he added.
Top scorer for the game was Gage Immoos with 10 points. Other teamwork was evidenced by Brent Labhart and Connor Smith, each with 8; Ian Averett, 7; Ross Rawlins, 5; Nick Wilson, 3; and Dillon Porter, 1.

The boys narrlowly lost the day before when playing Riverside on the Pirates’ home court. Final score was 48-45.
In the last minute and a half, Riverside was up by a few points. “We just couldn’t pull it off,” said Miller. “We had the lead in the third and most of the fourth. Towards the end we were down one and had the opportunity to shoot, but we couldn’t get back into it,” he added.
Averett put in 14 points for the game, with Immoos, 10. Other contributions in scoring were by Ross Rawlings, 6; Cole Hawkins and Smith, each with 4, and Labhart, Porter, each with 3; and Wilson, 1.
The Prospectors look forward to longtime rival, the Burns Hilanders this Friday, Jan. 22 at home. “They’ve done pretty well and are 2-0 in league. They beat Umatilla and Vale. Our guys will work really hard,” said Miller.
