Obituaries: Michael Eugene Negus

HONOLULU – Mike Negus, 65 of Honolulu, died Tuesday Feb. 16, 2010. A remembrance gathering will be held in Honolulu Feb. 28 and a celebration of life is planned for September in Grant County.

Mr. Negus was born on Sept. 30, 1944, in Prairie City, to Tom and Flora Thompson Negus.

Following his 1962 graduation from Mt. Vernon High School, he attended Portland State University and court reporting school.

He also served in the U.S. Army Intelligence Corps from 1965 to 1968.

In 1968, he served as Eastern Oregon campaign coordinator for U.S. Senator Wayne Morse. Following the election, he moved to Hawaii where he met his wife Isabelle Belanio.

In 1977, they returned to the mainland and established Mike Negus Insurance in John Day in 1980. They retired to Honolulu in 2001.

Survivors include his wife, Isabelle; daughter, Elena (Thomas); sons, Jake and Josh Stephens of Philomath; sisters, Pat (Gale) McClintock, Terri (Ed) Taber, both of Pendleton, and Kathleen (Leroy) Negus-Bennett of Wallowa; several nieces and nephews; and his Hanai son, Marvin Belanio and Marvin’s daughters.

Hanai is a special Hawaiian designation for a child you accept into your home as your own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Flora Thompson Negus.
