Gluten-free workshop
JOHN DAY – A gluten-free workshop will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 22, in the health department building’s Johnnie Titus room.

The workshop, sponsored by the Grant County OSU Extension office, will feature demonstrations on making English muffins, pie shells and hamburger buns.

Candlelight vigil
JOHN DAY – Grant-Harney County CASA (Court-Appointed Special Advocates) will hold a “candlelight vigil” at 8 p.m. Friday, April 23, at the stoplight in John Day.
The event is intended to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect in our area. April is designated as National Child Abuse Awareness Month. For more information, call 541-575-5574.
Writing workshop
DAYVILLE – The River Valley Writers Group presents a writing workshop from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the C Bar C Ranch in Dayville.
Michael Aune from Lynden, Wash. will give a presentation on combining creative writing with black and white photography. Writer Richard Mack from La Grande will read from his poetry, essay and fiction works.

Foundation dinner
JOHN DAY – The annual Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation Dinner and Benefit Auction will be held Saturday, April 24, in Trowbridge Pavilion at the Grant County Fairgrounds.

Dinner theater
SENECA – The Seneca School Junior High presents a dinner theater performance of “Murder in the Heir,” at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 24.
The evening includes a lasagna dinner with dessert.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $7 for children under 12, or $40 for a family pass.

Hunger fund-raiser
CANYON CITY – Humbolt Elementary fourth- and fifth-graders will hold a “hunger meal” fund-raiser from 5:30-7 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, in the cafeteria.
The meal will be simple, comparable to one school children in Kenya might get for lunch. People are asked to donate what they might spend on food for a day.
At 7 p.m., the students will present “Voices for Africa,” a mixture of vocal and instrumental music, as well as information about Kenya.
Proceeds will help the Kenya Team 2010 build a cook shed at Nkanga School in Kenya. For more information, call Louise Kienzle at 541-575-0454.
Diabetes series
JOHN DAY – Blue Mountain Hospital will sponsor a free, two-day series on diabetes from 10 a.m.-3 p.m., with a lunch break, Wednesday, April 28, and 10 a.m.-noon, Thursday, April 29.
Participants should attend both classes.
Topics covered include the basics of diabetes, exercise, nutrition, meal planning with the dietician and foot care.

JOHN DAY – Children and parents are invited to enjoy planting fun at a “Little Gardeners” workshop, 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, April 29, at Families First Parent Resource Center. Explore planting, seed sorting, digging in the dirt and gardening fun. The cost is $5 per family.

JOHN DAY – Grant Union High School staff invite parents of eighth-graders, who will attend GU next year, to a parent night at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 29, in the GUHS library.
Eighth-graders can attend a student orientation the following day, Friday, April 30, from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Lunch will be provided.

Spaghetti fund-raiser
JOHN DAY – A silent auction and spaghetti dinner fund-raiser for Carl and Cecelia Heckman will be held Friday, April 30, at the John Day Senior Center.
The silent auction will start at 5 p.m. with dinner served from 5:30-7:30 p.m. The cost is $7 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, or $25 for a family of four or more.

JOHN DAY – The 3rd annual Community Art Show will be held Friday and Saturday, April 30 and May 1, next to the Home Health building on West Main St. in John Day.
Times are 6-9 p.m. Friday night, with the artists, and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday.
Camp Logan
PRAIRIE CITY – Step back in time to the 1860s at the 8th annual Camp Logan Days, Saturday and Sunday, May 1 and 2.
The event, presented by Prairie City School, will run from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m. Sunday.
Camp Logan is located at Howdy Town, just west of Prairie City on Highway 26.
Home and garden time
JOHN DAY – It’s time to make plans for home and outdoor spaces at the annual Home, Garden and Outdoor Expo, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, May 1, at Trowbridge Pavilion at the Grant County Fairgrounds. Admission is free.

EMT dinner
MONUMENT – The 7th annual May Day Dinner honoring Monument EMTs will be held Saturday, May 1, at the Monument Senior Center.
Two seating times will be 4:30-5:30 p.m. and 6-7 p.m., for a prime rib dinner prepared by chef Ed Andersen. Donations of pies for the event are requested and reservations are required.

Hunting education
PRAIRIE CITY – A hunting education course will be offered from 6:30-9 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, May 3, 5, 6, 10, 12 and 13, and Saturday, May 15, in the Prairie City High School library.
Registration will be 6 p.m. Monday, May 3.
Sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, The course is for ages 9 and up, and is free for those under 18, paid by the Oregon Hunters Association.
