PRAIRIE CITY – Kids Fishing Day will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 12, at McHaley Pond just east of Prairie City.
“Everybody should come. It’s a lot of fun,” said Linda Brown of the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. Seventy kids, aged 14 and under, turned out last year for the event, which is put on by the Tribes at the pond on their conservation area, in partnership with Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Forest Service.
Children can bring their own fishing gear, or there will be poles and bait they can borrow, said Brown. Young anglers should be accompanied by parents.
Lunch and beverages for everyone will be provided. There will also be cookies donated by Subway.
Fishing enthusiasts will receive prizes and can participate in contests in three age divisions. The event also includes demonstrations on making art prints of fish and fly tying. There are contests for casting contest, as well as largest fish, and longest total stringer. Anglers follow state fishing regulations, and are limited to a catch of five fish.
Volunteers will be on hand to clean kids’ fish. The pond can be found by turning north off Hwy. 26 at the red barns and bunkhouse.
The event draws volunteers from the Tribes, ODFW, the Forest Service and Oregon State Police, although other helpers are always welcome, said Brown.
