High water prompts closure

KIMBERLY – Due to dangerously high water and public safety concern, all public boat launches on the John Day River between Kimberly and the Lower Burnt Ranch are closed until further notice.

The areas have been posted with warning signs and ribbon.
The portion of the John Day River that runs through Wheeler County is above flood stage and the volume of water is expected to maintain or increase over the next several days.
Anyone who intentionally ignores or violates the posted warnings will be subject to arrest and prosecution.

The Wheeler County Sheriff’s Office in conjunction with BLM Law Enforcement and parks officials will monitor the river to determine when it can be safely navigated again.
