Collegians collect cash awards

GRANT COUNTY – Four local residents were recently awarded scholarships by two organizations.

Terry Hanson and Shilo Burton, are recipients of the 2010-1011 Grant County Futures scholarships, receiving $250 each.
Hanson volunteers as a firefighter with the Canyon City Fire Department, and is a special deputy for Grant County Search and Rescue. She is working on both an associate’s degree from Blue Mountain Community College and a bachelor’s degree from Eastern Oregon University.
Burton works for the Malheur National Forest and is also working on a bachelor’s degree from EOU.

The money will be used for tuition and books for classes taken through EOU’s or BMCC’s online programs at the Grant County Center.
The scholarships are awarded by the local College Advisory Committee, through an endowment of the Eastern Oregon University Foundation.
Two Grant County high school graduates are the 2010 John Day Elks Lodge scholarship winners.
First place and $2,000 went to Breanna Wilson of John Day, who was valedictorian for Grant Union High School’s graduating class. The daughter of Charles and Gretchen Wilson, she plans to attend Oregon State University in Corvallis this fall, majoring in biology.
Tel W. Winegar of Prairie City took the second place award of $1,000. The son of George and Christie Winegar, he was valedictorian for Prairie City High School’s graduating class, and plans to major in pre-physical therapy at Eastern Oregon University in La Grande in the fall.
They were among 12 Grant County seniors competing for the Elks scholarships this year, according to chairperson, Carol Rudishauser.
