Michael ‘Scott’ Kay

Michael Scott Kay, 41, died Nov. 22, 2010, while working avalanche control at Wolf Creek Ski Area in Colorado.

Mr. Kay was born Jan. 5, 1969, in Grand Junction, Colo. He grew up in Lakewood, Colo., before moving to Walsenburg, Colo., where he graduated from John Mall High School in 1987. 

After graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, where he served honorably for the next six years. He was a reconnaissance Marine and veteran of the Persian Gulf War.

In May 1997, he married Chantelle Zweygardt in Pagosa Springs, Colo. She grew up in Prairie City, graduating from PCHS in 1990.

He enjoyed anything and everything outdoors. He was an avid hunter, snow skier, water-skier, kayaker and dirt bike enthusiast. 

He was a devoted dad and husband; there was nothing more important to him than his family. 

Full of life, exuberant, fun-loving and hardworking, he leaves behind a piece of himself in all those who knew him. 

Survivors include his wife, Chantelle; sons, Nolan, 8, and Rhead, 6; his father, Skip; mother, Jo; sister, Danielle; and grandmothers, Pauline Young and Marie Kay.
