HEPPNER The Grant Union High School girls basketball team won one game and lost one in the Tuesday, Dec. 27 Heppner Christmas Tournament.

We came out slow and rusty from the Christmas break and struggled to run our offense and make shots, said coach Steve Speth of the first game with Dufur.

Each team forced the other into several turnovers, but Dufur was able to convert more into points, he said.

Final score was Grant Union 26, Dufur 40.

Lady Prospectors scoring were: Elle Rawlins, 6; Mackinsey Nash, 5; Sierra Burton and Brooke Griffith, each with 4; Caity Speth, 3; and Hailey McConnell and Rayne Houser, each with 2.

The girls came out and had an effective full-court press against McLoughlin High School (Mac-Hi) in the second game.

The Lady Prospectors lead 33-5 at the half.

We were able to get younger players significant playing time in the second half, said Speth.

 Grant Union won 66-26.

Leading scorers were Rawlins, 23; Speth, 13; Nash, 10; Amanda Branstetter, 8; Burton, 6; Griffith, Houser and DJ Kodesh, each with 2.

The team heads to Nyssa this Friday, Jan. 7 for their first league game of the season. Girls varsity game begins at 6 p.m.; boys varsity starts at 7:30 p.m.

As a fund-raiser for the team, the Lady Prospectors are now selling tickets for a prime rib dinner with all the fixings at the Snaffle Bit, to be held Sunday, Jan. 23. Tickets are $25 apiece, or $40 per couple. Contact team members or coach Steve Speth, 541-575-3780.
