- Fast and furious
GRANT COUNTY – They were talented on the field, fast on the track.
The 2011 track and field season brought out great strengths in athletes of Dayville, Grant Union and Prairie City high schools.
The small, but mighty Dayville students did well all season long. They took seven athletes to district competition. Two of them, Shyanne Winters and Justin Larson, qualifying to go on to state.
Winters earned a No. 4 spot in the girls javelin, Larson set a new state meet record in the same event. He threw the spear for 192 feet, 1 inch.
Grant Union also sent a strong contingency to state after a challenging season in highly-competitive 3A competition.
At the state level, Mary Roy took fourth in the triple jump, fifth in the long jump, and seventh in the 400-meter run.
Brent Labhart took eighth in three events – the 400, 800 and javelin – and ninth in the 1,500-meter run.
Jake Waldner placed eighth in the triple jump.
Trent Sohr took fifth in the high jump.
Nick Wilson was injured at the competition, but placed 10th in the long jump.
After a strong season, eight Prairie City athletes went on to state. Brady Doty – in a season-long domination in the boys javelin – took second place in the boys javelin, behind Dayville’s Justin Larson. Doty was seventh in the shot put, and ninth in the long jump.
Among other Panthers at state, Katie Cary went third in the girls javelin, Cole Hoberg was fourth in the high jump, Kristin Nash was ninth in the 1500 meter run, and Kieley Williams was ninth in the long jump.
