BEND – The American Red Cross Pacific Northwest Blood Services Region recently issued an appeal for blood donors, noting a drop in the supply.

Summertime tends to be a slower time for donations, yet the need is still there, officials said. All types are needed, but especially O negative, which can be used to treat any patient.

Dr. Mary Jo Drew, medical director for the blood services region, noted that she’s seen firsthand how blood transfusions can help save lives.

“The potential for a blood shortage could have a devastating effect on a patient whose survival may depend on blood being there when needed,” she said.

Local blood drive coordinator Joan Bowling of Canyon City said that if at all possible donors should make and keep their appointments.

She added that she understands that some donors don’t know when they will be available, and changing or making walk-in appointments in those cases is acceptable.

She noted that the Red Cross will return to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in John Day on Tuesday and Wednesday, Aug. 23 and 24, the week of fair, and donors will receive a free pass to attend the fair on Thursday.

Bowling said the main reason donations go down in the summer is due to vacations.

“That doesn’t mean that the demand is not there, she added. “There is a real need for blood.”
