Teen sentenced for April spree

CANYON CITY – Cody M. Bullard, 18, was sentenced July 27 in Grant County Circuit Court for a rash of vandalism incidents last spring in John Day.

The early morning spree on April 25 included one vehicle fire and several acts of criminal mischief and unlawful entry into vehicles. The incidents were reported in an area that included N.W. 2nd Street, 3rd Street and N.W. Canyon Blvd.

According to assistant District Attorney Jeremy Dietrich, Bullard was 17 at the time of the crimes and could have been tried in juvenile court. However, he chose instead to face the charges as an adult, after he turned 18.

Bullard pleaded guilty in the case on July 21.

Judge William D. Cramer Jr. sentenced Bullard, as on the following:

One count of second-degree arson – 30 days in jail, supervised probation for 60 months and 40 hours of community service. He must pay fines of $208, plus $39,070.64 in restitution to 20 area individuals and businesses.

One count of first-degree criminal mischief – 30 days jail, supervised probation for 60 months, 40 hours of community service. He was fined $208. The sentence was to run concurrent with all previously imposed sentences.

Two counts of second-degree criminal mischief – Supervised probation for 60 months, 40 hours of community service, and $168 in fines.

Cramer also ordered him to write letters of apology to each of the victims in the case.

The judge dismissed 11 counts of first-degree criminal mischief, nine of unlawful entry into a motor vehicle, three of second-degree criminal mischief, two of third-degree theft and one of attempting to commit arson.
