JOHN DAY – A group of generous athletes will make a small difference in ending world hunger – by swimming, pedaling and running – this Saturday, Aug. 13, in John Day.
The third annual Triathlon for Hunger begins at 8:15 a.m. at Gleason Pool in John Day. Half of the money raised from the event will go to local food banks; the rest will help fill a great need in an African country.
In 2009, a sustainable farming project in Kenya was chosen to benefit, and in 2010, a family preservation program in Southern Ethiopia.
This year’s mission will benefit the Malawi Children’s Village, a community-based AIDS orphan program.
The triathlon entails swimming 10 laps in Gleason Pool, bicycling for 12.4 miles, and running 3.1 miles.
Participants are asked to arrive 30 minutes early for registration and race instructions.
The cost of the event is $35 per individual and $55 per teams of 2 or 3.
