JOHN DAY – Grant Union Junior/Senior High School’s Prospector Booster Club is kicking off the 2011-2012 school year with several activities in store.

The group will have a booth at the Grant County Fair, Aug 24-27, to share information about their programs and invite new members to join. New Grant Union students in grades 7-9 and their families are especially encouraged to stop by the fair booth with any questions.

The cost for a new or renewal family membership is $25 a year, which also enters the family in a drawing. Prizes include a surprise gift from the Outpost Restaurant and an activity pass, valued at $100, provided by principal Curt Shelley.

Winners will be announced at a “Kick-off Barbecue,” set for 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, in the GU parking lot. Anyone in the community is welcome to attend. Burgers and hot dogs will be provided. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish: salads for last names starting with A-M, and desserts for N-Z.

This is the fourth year the Prospector Booster Club has held the event.

Through fund-raising efforts, the nonprofit provides help to sports, band/choir and cheerleading programs at Grant Union. Members also run the concession stand during sporting events and assist the junior class work shifts at the concessions. The group also carries a variety of GU apparel for sale.
