JOHN DAY – The arrest of Mt. Vernon resident Drew Harmer on drug charges stunned members of the John Day Elks Lodge, where he has been exalted ruler since last spring.

Harmer resigned from the Lodge’s top post after his arrest Aug. 16.

Beth Simonsen, Lodge secretary, said the Lodge’s past exalted rulers association has stepped up to lead the organization pending election of a new exalted ruler.

The Lodge will meet at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, to discuss the election and take nominations.

Simonsen said the events of last week have been shocking for the membership, especially in light of the organization’s commitment against illegal drug use. The local lodge has brought the Elks’ drug awareness and education trailer to town several times.

Harmer can remain a member of the Elks as he faces charges in the legal system. Under the organization’s rules, if he were convicted of such a crime, he would automatically be expelled from membership.
