JOHN DAY – A National Recovery Month celebration and free barbecue is coming up at noon Saturday, Sept. 10, at the Seventh Street Complex.
The community is invited and families and children of all ages are welcome to attend.
The local event, sponsored by Grant County Safe Communities Coalition, aims celebrate those in recovery from substance abuse and to help raise awareness about the importance of prevention, treatment and recovery to improve the lives of individuals and their families.
Information about addiction and mental health disorders will be available and the gathering will provide an opportunity to connect with others about addiction, recovery and mental health prevention, services and treatment.
Nationally, Recovery Month is sponsored by Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), promoting the societal benefits of treatment for substance use and mental disorders and celebrating people in recovery.
It also lauds the contributions of treatment providers and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible, and behavioral health is important to overall health.
In 2009, 4.3 million people received treatment for a substance use disorder, 30.2 million for a mental disorder.
“Continued outreach and education efforts are needed to change the misconceptions some individuals have about these problems, their treatment and the recovery process,” says Dr. Wesley Clark, director of SAMHSA’s Center for Substance Abuse Treatment Center on the Recovery Month website. “Your involvement with Recovery Month will reach the millions of individuals and families who still need help, and it will remove the barriers and negative attitudes experienced by those in treatment and recovery.”
He said the aim of Recovery Month is to educate the public that “prevention works, treatment is effective and recovery is possible.”
