Exploring local history

GRANT COUNTY – Anyone with a little extra time this Labor Day weekend might enjoy checking out some local history at one of Grant County’s museums.
Here’s the information for each one:
Grant County Historical Museum, 101 S. Canyon City Blvd., Canyon City, 541-575-0362. Open 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Admission: Adults, $4; Seniors, $3.50; children ages 7-17, $2; children under 6, free. Open through Friday, Sept. 30.
Grant County Ranch and Rodeo Museum, 241 E. Main St., John Day, 541-575-5545. Open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Thursday, Friday and Saturday, or by appointment. Admission: Adults, $3, children under 12, free. Open through Friday, Sept. 30.
DeWitt Museum at Depot Park, Bridge and Main streets, Prairie City, 541-820-3330 or 541-820-3603. Open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is $3. Open through Saturday, Oct. 15.
Kam Wah Chung and Company Museum and Interpretive Center, 125 NW Canton St., John Day, 541-575-2800. Guided tours are led on the hour. Open every day, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Admission is free; donations are welcome. Open through Monday, Oct. 31.
John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Thomas Condon Paleontology Center, one mile north of Highways 19 and 26, 541-987-2333. Open 9 a.m.-4 p.m. every day, year-round, except federal holidays. Admission is free; donations accepted.
Grant County Genealogical Society Research Center, Parsonage building behind Historic Advent Church, West Main Street in John Day, 541-932-4718 or 541-575-2757. Open 1-4 p.m. Thursdays; 2-5 p.m. Fridays; and 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturdays, year-round.
