JOHN DAY Thoughts of patriotism and community were on the minds of students in this years Americanism essay contest sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit 77.
About 310 Grant County students in grades 3-12 participated this year, writing on the theme How can I show my patriotism in my community?
Auxiliary chairman Joan Bowling said the number of entries was around 100 more than last year. Lois Wacken and Louise Nelson were the judges.

Class I, grades 3 and 4:
