The agency extended the season, which usually ends March 31, due to forecasts projecting challenging driving conditions in snow zones into early April.

Drivers who dont need to drive in the snow zones are urged not to wait to switch out their tires, however.

ODOT also is encouraging drivers to consider other types of traction tires or chains. Nonstud traction tires approved by the Rubber Manufacturers Association for use in severe snow conditions are identified by a symbol featuring a three-peaked mountain and snowflake. Research indicates that when used on bare pavement, these tires also provide better traction than studded tires.

A study done in 2000 said studded tires are to blame for $40 million in damages to city streets, country roads and highways.
