PENDLETON The Grant Union High School golf team took fourth in the 1A/2A/3A Invitational, held April 20 at Pendleton Country Club.

Prospector Chris Gibson took home a second-place medal, shooting 84.

In girls competition, Chenise Clark shot a personal best of 99, taking fourth place.

More than 80 boys and girls from 10 teams competed on the challenging par-72 course, said coach Ron Lundbom.

Heppner was the No. 1 boys team, with 341, followed by Enterprise, 381; Cove, 395; Grant Union, 399; Horizon Christian, 434; Wallowa, 438; Nyssa, 444; Burns, 452; Union, 513; and Nixyaawii, 520.

For individual boys, Zac Orem of Heppner took first place with an 81, followed by Lucas Jobe of Heppner, with 84; Austin Gutierrez of Heppner, 85; and Cody Hopkins of Enterprise, 86.

Heppner also won on the girls side, shooting 436. Enterprise was close behind with a 440.

Medalists were Maggie Thompson of Burns, with 84; Blake Greenup of Heppner, 96; Shawna Chrissman of Wallowa, 97; Grant Unions Chenise Clark, 99; and Jill Morton of Enterprise, 105.

I was happy with the outcome in Pendleton, said Lundbom. Although we placed fourth, we know where we lost most of our strokes. And by district competition we will approach the course differently.

Chris Gibson shot a solid round in taking second, he said, and although not his best round there, he knows what he needs to do to win district.

Lundbom also lauded Clark.

Chenise shot another personal best this season 99 and took fourth for the girls. Im so proud of her, he said. Chenise has been working hard and it showed. Breaking 100 for the first time is a big deal for any golfer, and she was only 3 strokes from second.

District competition also will be at the Pendleton club.

We all know what we have to do now to place there, said Lundbom.

The Prospectors travel to the 2A Invitational this Friday, April 27, at Buffalo Peak Golf Course in Union.
