Pros slide into Vale split

JOHN DAY The Grant Union High School baseball team won one and lost one to the Vale Vikings at home Friday, April 20.

The Prospectors fell 6-9 to Vale in seven innings in the first game, and then returned in the clutch for a 3-2 second-game win.
The first game obviously didnt go the way we wanted it to, said coach Brian Delaney. We got off to a good start and played well through the second inning, but a few errors and some big hits led to a seven-run third inning for Vale.
Vale is a good team, and they capitalize on mistakes.

Delaney said that if not for the third inning, his team would have won the game.
The Pros didnt let the barrage in that inning stop them.
We were able to get some of that loss back, said Delaney, but it just wasnt enough.
For Grant Union, Rayce Houser got on base twice, doubling in the fourth inning.
A two-run fifth inning helped bring Grant Union within seven.
An RBI single by Garret Gardner and an error triggered the beginning of a Grant Union comeback.
Four runs in the bottom of the sixth helped close the deficit to 6-9.
A two-run error, an RBI single by Dominic DeHaven, and an RBI single by Gardner fueled more Prospector momentum.
The second game went much better, and offered fans some drama and excitement.
Jordan Ackerman went 2-2, singling in the third and sixth innings.
On the mound, Trey Thompson struck out nine, paving the way for a win. He allowed two earned runs, seven hits and two walks over seven innings.
We were down 1-2, going into the bottom of the seventh. We tied it up with a back call at 2-2, said Delaney.
With loaded bases and just one out, Kyler Deiter stepped up to bat. With 2 strikes on him, Kyler got a pitch he liked, and drove a ball to deep center, knocking in the winning run, said Delaney.
I am proud of our team for not quitting and coming through in a clutch situation to win a must-win game, he said. I am also proud of the seniors and their leadership in the late innings. Trey threw a great game and did a great job keeping the Vale bats quiet.
The Pros are preparing for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. Friday, April 27, hosting Burns in John Day.
The Hilanders described by Delaney as a dangerous team are at the top of the Eastern Oregon League with four wins: two over Umatilla and two over Riverside.
Burns is well coached, and they are hitting the ball extremely well as of late, Delaney said. The games will be another huge challenge for us and we will do everything to prepare.
Delaney said the team appreciates the support of fans, and hopes for another rousing turnout Friday.
