Monument Rural Fire District hearing

1:30 p.m., Monument Senior Center

The Grant County Court will hold a hearing to take testimony on properties to include or exclude in the proposed Monument Rural Fire Protection District. Maps are available at the meeting, the Courthouse and posted in Monument.

Thursday, May 17

Farmers Market meeting

6 p.m., Forest Room, Outpost Restaurant, John Day

The John Day Farmers Market Committee will meet to begin planning the Farmers Markets, to be held on Saturday mornings, from June 16 to Oct. 20. All prospective vendors and interested assistant managers are welcome to the general invitational meeting. Call Jim or Sandy Bay at 541-932-2725.

Young Life annual banquet

6 p.m., John Day Senior Center

All are invited to the banquet which will include a free dinner of smoked tri-tip, scalloped potatoes, coleslaw and hot rolls. A dessert auction will follow. Attire is casual or hero wear. Protecting our kids seminar

Cory Jewell Jensen, M.S., will offer a free seminar for parents and community members on protecting children from sex offenders. Jensen and her husband, Steve, direct the Center for Behavioral Intervention in Beaverton. There will be a free dinner and a movie for children. Call Sheri Webb, 541-620-0583.

Saturday, May 19

Training on preventing child molestation

8:30 a.m.-5 p.m., Canyon City Community Hall

The training for professionals will be led by Cory Jewell Jensen, M.S., who has worked with adult sex offenders and their families for 27 years. Topics will include Selection and Seduction and The Impact of Sexual Victimization. Lunch will be provided. Preregister by Thursday, May 10. Call 541-620-0583.

Strut, Straddle, Stride or Stroll

9 a.m., Blue Mountain Hospital, John Day

The choices are: bike 13 miles from Blue Mountain Nursing Home in Prairie City; run 6 miles from Holliday Ranch; walk 4 miles from Dog Creek Road; or stroll 1.5 miles from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Finish line is BMH.

The cost is $20 a person, or $15 for children, which includes a T-shirt. All children will get prizes, and all participants will be entered in drawings for prizes. 4th annual Community Art Show

4-8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Saturday, Cornerstone Christian Fellowship, John Day

All are welcome to the free show, with work by local artists on display and for sale. The cost is $5 per artist. Participants should bring their own art, easels and lighting, and finger foods for the opening. Set up times are 4-6 p.m. Thursday, and 9-11 a.m. Friday. Memorial Day Chautauqua

10 a.m., Dayville

Activities include historial and geological programs at the Presbyterian Church starting at 10 a.m., an American Legion ceremony at City Park at noon, and a golf tournament at South Fork Golf Course. The public is invited to learn about Grant Countys health private timberlands study. Consultant Bill Dryden of Forest Resources Affairs LLC will report on the project.

Voice of the Martyrs presentation

6-7:30 p.m., Redeemer Lutheran Church, John Day

Ocheltree, Voice of the Martyrs representative, will offer an informational presentation on the nonprofit, inter-denominational organization, and a short video. VOM was founded 35 years ago by Pastor Richard Wurmbrand. Call 541-542-2333.
